"In 1962, at the age of sixty-eight, André Kertész retired as a professional photographer. For the previous fourteen years he had worked for various Condé Nast publications, sometimes as a fashion photographer, but chiefly as a photographer of decorative interiors for House and Garden magazine. Rarely was he seen as a photojournalist, the capacity in which he had been known in Europe. In that year, after his recovery from an illness, he celebrated his fiftieth anniversary as a photographer by becoming an amateur again. His curiosity was still as vigorous as it had been when he took his first photographs in his native Budapest; the youthful innocence of the eighteen-year-old novice was gone, but in its stead was the sophistication of a master's playfulness.
