"...Ellsworth Kelly comments about the way in which he sees the world and the visual experiences that, in turn, inspire his unique paintings and sculptures have been documented in the numerous essays and articles about his distinguished career. Yet it continues to be worth mentioning that this keen observation of the physical world is at the core of his practice. For almost 60 years, it has been a practice defined by vibrant, monochromatic, shaped canvases and multi-panel paintings, abstract sculptures in a range of materials and scales, reliefs that challenge the boundaries between two- and three-dimensionality, as well as precise drawings and insightful collages and photographs. His distinct way of seeing enables him to focus on discrete aspects of buildings, windows, trees, figures, shadows and the like - and to abstract such everyday elements from his surroundings into the combinations of colours, lines and forms that are at the roots of the art for which he has become well known..."
