"Grete Stern and Buenos Aires City were introduced to each other simultaneously. In October 1935, barely two months after arriving in Argentina with Horacio Coppola, her husband, Grete presented her photographs. Following an invitation from Victoria Ocampo, who headed Sur Publishers, a joint exhibition with Coppola was held at the Sur offices. In restrospect it is now considered the first exhibition of modern photography in this country... All of Grete's entries to this exhibition gad been produced in Germany and London between 1929 and 1935, during the year of her photographic training and early professional activity: portraits, compositions, advertising photographs and landscapes. Her later work in Argentina, carried out between 1936 and 1981, extended such a range of genres by adding to it important series of photomontages, photographs of works of art, and photojournalism..."
