"Elegant women, still life objects or substances in decay: all were beautiful to Irving Penn. Mr. Penn taught us the angles and possibilities for finding beauty in our everyday lives. My first encounter with Mr. Penn's work was in the pages of Vogue magazine when I was a student in the 1960s. I was deeply struck by the purity of his photographs. Later I started working in clothing design. It was in 1983 that Pr. Penn first photographed two of my pieces for Vogue. From 1987 on he photographed my collection twice a year, for thirteen years without interruption. By the end he had taken over 250 images. I was never present at the photography sessions. The transparencies were sent to me later and each time they were a total surprise, way beyond my expectation. Those photographs were a visual critique of my work. They expressed a different point of view, one I could not fathom clearly. They blew new life into the clothes. This response, in turn, gave me the renewed courage to go forth…" Issey Miyake.
