"Early in his career, Karales embarked on a photo essay documenting Rendville, Ohio, an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War and one of the few racially integrated communities in America in the late 1950s. Sometimes reminiscent of Depression era images made for the Farm Security Administration, the photographs demonstrate his ability to capture in images the essential qualities of a community. They also reflect Karales' sensibility and state of mind as he grappled with the racial issues that were to preoccupy him and the entire country for many subsequent years. Karales worked for Look magazine from 1960 until it ceased publication in 1971. This offered him many novel opportunities, including an assignment to photograph Martin Luther King, Jr. and another to follow and document the fifty-miles, five days, Selma (Alabama) march for voting rights in 1965… Through this new publication we discover that Karales' stature as an exceptional photojournalist and social documentary photographer is based on much more than one iconic image from Selma."
