"L'Amour Fou: Photography and Surrealism is the first book ever to study the crucial role photography did in fact play in the surrealist movement. It shows how photographers enlisted into the service of "subjective" surrealism their medium's very claim to "objective" reality. It corrects the mistaken notion that surrealist photograph was necessarily a "trick", a manipulated image. "Straight" prints were extensively employed by the surrealists to illustrate their literary and theoretical texts. Hitherto, no writer (except Walter Benjamin) has examined the photographs in the context of the fiction, poetry, and prose with which so many of them originally appeared. Of course, this book also abounds in the fantastic and distorted photographic creations that remain, as always, an important part of the surrealist oeuvre..."
