"The oeuvre of Marcel Gautherot (1910-1996), a French photographer who spent most of his life in Brazil, is the cornerstone of Brazil's modern photography. His work is marked by his territorial scope, his variety of themes and extraordinary aesthetic style. This refined sensibility features in two main strands of his work – architecture and ethnography – which are also characterized by the methodical rigor in which Gautherot conducted his major documentary projects. This rigor is also evident in Gautherot's systematic method of organizing his archive collection throughout his career: around 21,000 black-and-white negatives and 2,200 contact sheets, edited to provide a clear view of his work, which also includes approximately 3,000 slides and color negatives. Working in a country where up until the 1980s photography was not regarded as part of the arts circuit, the photographer did not live to see some aspects of his work receive public recognition… This book, along with the exhibition Marcel Gautherot at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris – the first retrospective of his work in his native city – crown the dissemination of Marcel gautherot's exceptional photographic work…" Extrait de "Brazil: Tradition and Invention" par Sergio Burgi.
