    "In Mark Tansey's paintings imaginary events are populated by real people. Tansey came to prominence in the late 1970s, when his representational style of painting signified a departure from the dominant abstract and conceptual art of his contemporaries. Tansey's paintings have been acclaimed for their wry explorations of serious intellectual and artistic issues through imaginary narratives. Many of his ambitious and inventive canvases focus on the universal search for meaning or truth. Others are centered around confrontations or chronicle the world of art while simultaneously satirizing it. On first glance the paintings may appear to be arid landscapes, sparse interiors, and shallow spaces,. Upon further examination they reveal an extraordinary density of infinitesimal, if ambiguous details: people and objects that can be metaphorically interpreted..."
