"The development of Robert Mapplethorpe's work over the past two decades reveals a strong and consistent vision that strives for perfection and balance in subject and form. Even his earliest works, from 1970 and 1971, display features that would characterize much of his mature art. By 1970, Mapplethorpe had finished art school at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where he produced paintings, drawings, and sculpture, and was beginning to experiment in other areas. He was not yet taking his own photographs, but rather was exploring the idea of the found object and questioning traditional notions of authorship and originality by making art with pages torn from books and magazines..."
