"When Frank Stella began making prints in 1967, he was already recognized as a major painter. His interest in printmaking was stimulated by the success of the lithography revival that had begun in the United States in the late 1950s. At the pioneering Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles and Universal Limited Art Editions on Long Island a keen interest was taken in the collaboration of professional printers with recognized artists. These two workshops raised the trained master printer to a level of importance previously assumed only in Europe and helped to establish an active American tradition of the peintre-graveur - the painter whom printmaking is a productive medium. Although he was a relative latecomer to these developments, Stella has asserted himself as an ambitious and distinguished painter-printmaker. Few printmakers have produced a body of work as compelling in its imagery. Over past fifteen years he has made nearly two hundred prints which are integral to our understanding of his art as a whole..." Ref LAR0085
