"There were some naïve outsiders, photographers, who when they learned that you were studying with Aaron, would ask if you also took pictures of walls. Those who knew him, however, were abundantly aware that this was an absurd assumption. Aaron strongly encouraged students to seek their own paths. He would inquire of students as to why they had made an image, and what direction they would take as a result of that image. He strongly felt that tomorrow's image would be a direct result of having made today's image. I doubt that he "taught photography" as much as he taught you to teach yourself. He conducted his remarkable life with an irresistibly warm humor. He once told the story of driving to New York He flipped his cigarette ashes out the window of the car, and after a while, smelled smoke. Stopping the car, he discovered the back seat on fire. He indicated, with a twinkle in his eye, that his only option out there alone on the road, was to pee on it. Sometimes he complained about spots on our prints. We all knew that many of the spots were actually ashes from his cigarette. So, for his birthday, I gave him a metal ashtray that was held at chest level by metal coat hangers that I had soldered on the ashtray and were bent to fit over his shoulders. He really laughed!" Joseph Sterling.
