"In the first decade of the twentieth century, public attention was drawn to Swedish poster art on two significant occasions. The first was in the leading journal Das Plakat; the second, during a week devoted to advertising art at the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm. Superlatives such as "splendid", "excellent" and "impressive" were used to describe the posters which were designed by artists who would continue to be active in the coming decades. The posters selected for this book were acquired over a period of 50 years. They present a multifaceted impression of a country during 100 years of its development, and are part of a huge and comprehensive collection, a would-be worldwide virtual poster museum. As a symbol of an era and the events which comprise it, the poster combines information, a message and a challenge into a single medium. It says, and indeed wants to say, everything at once. The image it depicts tears down the barrier of language and is accessible to everyone. As to how we perceive, interpret and respond to it is dependent on the experience, associations and frame of reference each one of us brings to it. The poster has earned its place in our world of pictorial representation - as history, culture and documentary evidence. The poster artist is a stage designer of the public realm, one who embellishes our everyday environment with ephemeral creations. His work, despite being printed by the thousand, quickly becomes a rarity. This book aims to make the Swedish poster better known and to give the artists of our outdoor galleries the place they deserve in the field of international comparison."
