"In speaking of his Pictures Andreas Alariesto speaks of two focal points in his life: Sompio and the old-time way of life; both are lost forever. Sompio as a whole no longer exists, one part is submerged under the waters of the Lokka basin and Andreas' home village lies at the very bottom. The Olden ways of life are buried deep too, somewhere in the memory of those people who once experienced them. Andreas has been a collector and a conservationist all his life. He has collected photographs and pictures of marine life, he would always draw pictures of his impressions where other people would jot them down in writing. He says his calling in life is to record the bygone ways of life, no, as a scientist would, no, Andreas recalls from memory. His mode of expression is brush and paint. In his paintings true events, memories, stories, books and a life's wisdom combine with the addition of a sprinkling of lore and beliefs, ancient sentiments and feelings. His paintings lead us into the lost world of Andreas. We see it such as it has become in his consciousness…"
