"In these northern lands and islands geographic harshness often results in sparse human populations. The land, however, is always full. The continuity exists of a lived silence and stillness so vast that it more than fully fills all the apparently unoccupied landspace. Silence abounds there and is endured. The hubbub of the great cities does not encroach. Elemental environments, stark and demanding in their iminediacy, confront and reduce expectations of Iesser gravity. Current chronology fails, leaving only the necessity to wait, act, and react. We are often unprepared to contend with the necessity of response in such emptiness. There is simply nothing else to do. It is often in such places that I wait, in order to make my work. I wait to catch up with the silence. I use the silence to gaze into. Gazing is my primary activity. In these quiet, empty, still places I first learned, twenty-five years ago, to consider how it was that a boat, buried in the ground in Norway for nearly one thousand years, could seem to fly. This boat is now known as the Gokstadt Ship. "Dreaming the Golkstadt", as both a project and a book, is the story of these continuing considerations about properties of transformation as I have come to understand them."
