DUPAIN'S BEACHES
"DUPAIN'S BEACHES" par Jill WHITE. Editions Chapter & Verse, 2005. Petit in-4 carré, couverture toilée blanche sous jaquette photo. 112 pages. Texte en anglais de Matthew Cawood, introduction par Sebastian Smee, illustré de 117 reproductions photographiques noir & blanc, in-texte et hors texte, par Max Dupain.
"Max Dupain, who took the Sunbaker, loved the beach. He spent holidays at the beach: as a teenager at his family's Newport Beach house; as a young man on camping holidays on the south coast of New South Wales; later in life with his family on the central coast. And he took pictures while he was on holiday. In fact he said, "The best work is always done on holidays." This collection of Dupain's photographs is therefore, by his own admission, among his "best work". In it we see Dupain's fascination with shadows, with sand patterns, with the arcs of seascape - and above all, with the people who indulged themselves on Australia's urban and country beaches over a period of sixty years… Jill White, as custodian of Dupain's personal/exhibition archive, offers us here the opportunity to share his vision of the beach as a place of relaxation and renewal. As Max said "For the recuperation of body and mind, there is nothing better than natural therapy sand, sunshine and surf"."
