EDWARD STEICHEN: THE PORTRAITS
"EDWARD STEICHEN: THE PORTRAITS" par Christian A. PETERSON. Edition The Art Museum Association of America. 1984. Grand in-8, do droit, couverture souple cartonnée photo (état d'usage). 44 pages.
"Edward Steichen is considered among the finest portrait photographers of the 20th century. His work in this genre spans a thirty-year period and ranges from the soft-focus, sensuous pictorial images published in Camera Work (1903-1917) to the crisp, clearly detailed portraits produced for Vogue and Vanity Fair. Through the work of this seminal artist, the portrait photograph evolved from descriptive document to independent art form. Edward Steichen: The Portraits is drawn entirely from the remarkable collection of The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, noted for its great strength in the area of photography. In 1969, the collection was greatly enriched through Julia Marshall's generous gift of a near-complete set of the publication Camera Work. The collection was further enhanced in 1982 through the gift of 100 Steichen photographs, the bequest of Edward Steichen by direction of Joanna T. Steichen and the George Eastman House, placing Minneapolis among the important centers in this country for the study of the work of this pioneering 20th century artist…"
