"If Hélène Binet's photographs simply were to document buildings, she would not be one of the most sough-after photographers of architectural space. Her work would be of interest only to architects and tourists seeking a memento fo their visits of real thing. Instead, Hélène Binet's photographs achieve the rare combination of yielding information while simultaneously evoking prolonged interest that is the hallmark of both great photography and great architecture. Much of Hélène Binet's photography is characterised by the ambiguous, disorientating and incomplete vantage points that she selects. These qualities are often inherent in contemporary architecture, and that Binet's photographs can be a means to understanding them is as important to architecture as it is to art. As wiewers we are required to seek out the angles and interruptions that are the essence of space, but in this way we are also drawn into an active dialogue with the image. As we resist the two-dimensionality of the medium and try to push out and create space within the frame, we are also engaged in a process that is the foundation of architecture…" Mark Rappolt.
