"When the sleeper awakes in one of Kafka's short stories with a sword stuck between his shoulder blades, he feels no pain whatsoever - at the most a surprise mixed with amusement. We have the same feeling when, like sleepwalking peeping toms, we contemplate Di Gerlando's photographs. Everything proves that it is a dream, and yet we are wide awake. Uncomplicated and tranquil his characters are busy with the strangest things: Sometimes one would think that they are trying to burst through a thin but impassable pellicle to meet with us. Other times, with closed eyes they offer themselves as if they were absent. The harshness, even the cruelty of the situations they are up against is maybe only an extreme form of humor or delicacy. Here there is no stageplay. Di Gerlando's images are bare. Their fantasy needs no tawdriness…"
