"The 1970s were anxious years for Americans, bracketed politically by presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, and photographically by Diane Arbus and Cindy Sherman. When Lewis Baltz made precisely that observation in 1985, he was admitting but not conceding cynicism. Emerging form the chaos of the '60s and coming up against dead ends in the '70s, Baltz and others initiated a rigorous search for ways out. New Topographics:  Photographs of a Man-altered Landscape, an exhibition that took place at the decade's midpoint, presented results of this search and opened new directions for photography in relation to contemporary art and society. As the exhibition's title implies but does not explain, these photographs survey the here and now..." Britt Salvesen.
