"Since the thirties, Norman Parkinson's photographs have captured the essential glamour of each successive decade. Here, for the first time, is the best of his work, accompanied by a highly entertaining autobiographical text that is peppered with incident and anecdote. Along with Avedon and Penn, he largely invented fashion photography as we know it today. Together they probably killed forever the static, posed pictures of the prewar era and his extraordinary action pictures taken in Le Touquet in 1939 predate those of many other pretentious photographers. His early pictures, mostly printed here in duotone, are marvelously nostalgic and modern at the same time. In the fifties, he became closely associated with Vogue and was their star photographer for over two decades, discovering many of the most celebrated models of the post-war era…"
