Along with Avedon and Penn, he largely invented fashion photography as we know it today. Together they probably killed forever the static, posed pictures of the prewar era and his extraordinary action pictures taken in Le Touquet in 1939 predate those of many other pretentious photographers. His early pictures, mostly printed here in duotone, are marvelously nostalgic and modern at the same time.
