ROY LICHTENSTEIN – PERFECT / IMPERFECT
"ROY LICHTENSTEIN – PERFECT / IMPERFECT". Collectif. Editions Gagosian Gallery, Beverly Hills. 2002. Imprimé au Canada. Grand in-4 carré, couverture toilée illustrée en couleurs. 128 pages.
"…Lichtenstein believed all of his work, superficially imagistic or not, was abstract. In these two series he was intrigued by their challenging, zany, asymmetric and loaded implications. The Perfect and Imperfect series offer a summation of his previous four decades working through the esoteric issues of modern figural representation versus geometric abstraction and its wide variety of contemporary offshoots. Here Roy (like the Chess player he was) can be seen planning many moves ahead, using the austere discipline of these series as an instructive and strategic change of pace before his next series of lush, brushy Brushstrokes and Pop comic Reflections. The public has not previously seen the Perfect and Imperfect series in such a concentrated way. We hope this exhibition and scholarly catalogue will expand opportunities for general understanding and critical review of these crucial mid-1980s works." Jack Cowart.
