"Some years ago, the magazine Idilio, published by Abril, decided to devote one of its pages to the interpretation of dreams. The title was: "Psychoanalysis will help you." At that time psychoanalytical concepts and ideas were penetrating all levels of society, and this page was gratefully received by the mainly female readership. I recall that the literary and interpretative side of the new section was under the direction of Professor Gino Germani, well-known in university circles, who signed his notes with the pseudonym of Richard Rest. The publishers, Editorial Abril, asked me to assist them with the photographic illustration of the dreams. I suggested that we should use photomontages. The work was carried out more or less as follows: Germani provided me with the text for the dream. In most cases it was a faithful Copy of one of the many letters sent to Abril with a request for interpretation. Generally, Germani gave me instructions concerning the layout, asking for it to be horizontal or vertical, or with a foreground that was darker than the background, or with forms that expressed restlessness. Sometimes he indicated that a figure should appear to be doing something or other; or he insisted on the inclusion of floral or animal elements. Well, what is a photomontage? An approximate definition: a combination oi different photographs, either pre-existing or taken specially for the purpose, in order to create a new photographic composition with them. This gives rise to numerous compositional possibilities, including the juxtaposition of unrealistic elements…" Grete Stern.
