"India's glorious textiles have been prized across the globe for centuries. The V&A is proud to hold the greatest collection of them in the world. Surprisingly, however, no major exhibition has ever been held at the V&A or elsewhere that focuses solely on the textiles themselves, nor has any book sought to provide an overview of this huge subject. This is what The Fabric of India exhibition and this accompanying book have set out to do. Many of the pieces seen in both the exhibition and the book have been brought out of storage for the first time since they were acquired in the nineteenth century. These unseen treasures shed a new light on the way we perceive Indian textiles. They not only include the well-known examples of mirror-work embroidery or export chintz but encompass a huge range of beautiful and often utilitarian fabrics that demonstrate fully the artistry of India's craftspeople…" Martin Roth.
