"Perhaps, as Wang Guangyi presents it, it may be true that 'Everyone is Potentially a Virus Carrier' and 'All Foodstuff is Potentially Poisonous', and danger lurks at every corner. For most of Wang's life, and likewise for everyone of his generation, he had constantly been warned that 'the class enemy is among us', and no soul searching and vigilance is too much for a bullet-proof journey through life. The over-arching figure of Mao Zedong has now receded far into the horizon, but his long shadow cast by the setting sun stretches even greater leagues with the passage of time. Wang Guangyi has always known that China will not be able to shake itself free of the shadow; if nothing else, the receding figure on the horizon will be sought out as a landmark to orient the bewildered generations scattered on the vast wasteland left in his wake. The brilliant insight of Wang as artist is to realise the lingering legacy of heroism in China's cultural world, and of an ideology that thrives on threat and danger…" Extrait de "A Politic of Engagement and Ideology of Stife" par Chang Tsong-zung.
